| BUTTERFLY ATTRACTING FLOWERS | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
| This section is in no way intended to be a complete listing of butterfly-attracting flowers. What I have tried to do is illustrate the most commonly used flowers in butterfly gardens (those that are also most readily available either through seeds or young plants). Whenever possible I have tried to include scientific names (and if anyone sees an error PLEASE let me know so I can correct it!). The flowers I am showing here have been used by me in my own gardens so you should have no problem attracting butterflies if you use them also. I have divided this into two sections, perennials and annuals. Keep in mind also that what may be an annual here in Rhode Island may end up being a perennial in the southern states (for example, lantana). I have also tried to illustrate the many varieties of certain species (for example, both butterfly bush and lantana come in a variety of colors). | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Just a quick sidenote One thing that I have learned over the years which I think is a good habit to get into is planting single species of flowers in groups. So, instead of having a garden with 20 different types of flowers, one of each, it is better to have the same size garden with 5 types of flowers, four of each! I have found that this works better for some reason in attracting butterflies (perhaps it is the higher concentration of a particular color in a given area). If anyone has any other gardening suggestions feel free to share them. Anything put on this website will be credited to you if found useful. |

| WHITE-SWAN CONEFLOWER This daisy-looking coneflower also goes by the scientific name of Echinacea purpurea. It is similar in everyway to the PURPLE CONEFLOWER except for the white flower. Plant these in groups of twelve or more for the best butterfly-attracting results. Zones 3-9. |
